The 13 British colonies founded on the Atlantic coast of North America from the 17th century were populated by Europeans and slaves which did not mix with the Native Americans.

After the Seven Years´ War between Britain and France the colonists were not satisfied with the metropolis because the taxation increases to pay the expenses of the war.
There were protests Britain caused by the tea monopoly, the high taxes and the lack of representation of the American settlers in the British parliament. The most important was the Boston Tea Party in 1773.

The British army suppressed the revolt violently and war broke out in 1775. Representatives of the settlers declared Independence on 4th of July 1776.

The British defeats at the battles of Saratoga and Yorktown put an end to the war in 1783 when Britain recognized the independence of USA.


In 1787, the United States Constitution was adopted, amended by the Bill of Rights. It was the first written liberal constitution based on the principles of parliamentarism and the Enlightenment. In 1789, George Washington was elected as the first president.
The example of the United States had a great impact on European liberal revolutions, such as the French Revolution (1789), and on Latin American independence revolutions.
